Why Hawkeye Episode 5 Will Blow Up Twitter - All Theories

Warning: SPOILERS for Hawkeye episode 4.

Disney's Hawkeye episode 5 is set to blow up Twitter, and there are several possibilities why it could change the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Hawkeye, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) makes the mistake of wearing Hawkeye's (Jeremy Renner) old Ronin outfit while fighting criminals at a black market auction. Now, Clint Barton's old enemies are on her trail, and Hawkeye needs to give up his holiday plans to help out. Together with Bishop, Hawkeye must face his past as Ronin, recover a stolen Avengers watch, and potentially take on an underground crime lord. If he does so, he just might make it home to his kids for the holidays.

Hawkeye episode 5 already has the internet buzzing. According to an industry insider report, the new episode will "blow up Twitter a bit." While there aren't many other details from the report, the episode's directors, the British directing duo of Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood (credited as Bert and Bertie), teased more to Screen Rant. The pair teased a tonal shift in the series that could be related to characters or discoveries. "You won't be disappointed," Bert said.

If Hawkeye episode 5 does blow up the internet, there are several likely reasons why. Since the show's beginning, fans have expected Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk/Kingpin to show up, and several teases indicate an appearance is forthcoming. Another Kingpin-adjacent character is also possible, with Charlie Cox's Daredevil potentially making a cameo. Episode 4 already delivered an appearance by Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, and there could be a deeper story going on with her. The episode also teased a certain Avengers watch that could come back into play in episode 5. Of course, the surprise could be bigger than unexpected characters, with the series also cluing audiences into a Multiversal twist in Hawkeye.

Kingpin is the custom-suit-wearing elephant in the room for Hawkeye. The Disney+ series strongly leaned into Kingpin teases in episode 3, possibly showing the character in a Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) flashback. During the flashback showing Maya Lopez taking a martial arts class as a child, her father, William Lopez (Zahn McClarnon), tells Maya that her "uncle" will take her home after class. Maya's "uncle" just happens to be a large, suit-wearing person. The mysterious figure pinches Maya's cheek, but Uncle's face remains unseen. Besides the flashback tease, Hawkeye has also noted that someone is above Maya in the Tracksuit Mafia hierarchy. With Maya's connection to Kingpin in Marvel's comics, an appearance by the character seems inevitable, and it could be a significant reason the internet will rejoice about Hawkeye episode 5.

Besides Maya Lopez, another character deeply tied to Kingpin could show up. Fans have long awaited Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil to show up in the MCU, and Hawkeye may be the perfect opportunity. D'Onofrio's Kingpin made his debut in Netflix's now-canceled Daredevil, so the characters' appearances in the MCU could likely go hand-in-hand. Interestingly, Marvel boss Kevin Feige recently confirmed that Cox would play Daredevil in the MCU if the character were to show up. Feige was coy about any specifics, adding, "How we see that, when we see that, remains to be seen." But with Hawkeye episode 5 just around the corner, the timing of the quote may not be an accident.

Yelena Belova stole Hawkeye episode 4 with a surprise cameo. The appearance follows up on a Black Widow post-credits scene where Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) blamed Hawkeye for Black Widow's (Scarlett Johansson) death. In the scene, she gives Yelena the chance to take him down. However, Yelena doesn't kill Hawkeye during the pair's clash in the episode, so there may be more to her story. Episode 5 will likely follow up on Yelena's appearance, perhaps even bringing Julia Louis-Dreyfus's character into the show. There's also the possibility that Eleanor Bishop (Vera Farmiga), Kate's mother, is behind Yelena's appearance, wanting the assassin-for-hire to take Hawkeye out.

Thus far, Hawkeye has made a lot of fuss about a mysterious watch that's somehow tied to the Avengers. The watch first showed up at the black market auction where Kate Bishop takes on criminals, and Kate eventually discovers it in Maya Lopez's apartment. According to Hawkeye, the watch belongs to someone who used to work with him. Barton tells Kate that the mystery person has been "out of the game a long time," but their identity is tied to the watch.

Hawkeye episode 5 could finally reveal the watch's owner. Since someone stole the watch from the Avengers Compound, it could belong to a former hero. Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) is a possibility, and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) could also be connected. However, Maya Lopez/Echo has a vendetta against Ronin in the series, obsessing over killing the masked vigilante ever since he supposedly killed her father. She also had notes on Barton and his family in her apartment, hinting that she might suspect Hawkeye is secretly Ronin. So the watch is likely tied to Hawkeye and his identity. It may even belong to his wife, Laura Barton (Linda Cardellini). The upcoming episode could reveal that Laura was once a superhero or SHIELD agent, and the watch could expose her identity.

Episode 5 also has an outside chance of revealing the owner of the former Avengers Tower. Marvel has teased the tower's new owner since Spider-Man: Homecoming, but the MCU always stops short of revealing the Avenger Tower buyer's identity. Hawkeye again brought attention to the building, showing it in the background as a young Kate Bishop witnessed Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and the Chitauri aliens' attack on New York from 2012's The Avengers. The tower's buyer could be anyone from Kingpin to the Fantastic Four, and a reveal of the owner would undoubtedly set Twitter alight.

Throughout Hawkeye, there have been oddities hinting that the series takes place in an alternate MCU timeline. For instance, in the series premiere, the Avengers/Stark Tower is slightly different from the one shown in The Avengers. Instead of missing a "K" from the word "STARK," which fell off during the attack, the sign shown in Hawkeye is missing the "R." The moment seems like more than an MCU Hawkeye continuity error. Additionally, an actor representing Paul Rudd's Ant-Man appears in a play about the attack on New York, but Ant-Man wasn't present in the main timeline during the attack. Thus far, Hawkeye has been a more street-level Avengers story, but a Multiverse twist would undoubtedly indicate a tonal shift, as the directors teased.
