The Legend of Zelda has had plenty of spooky elements throughout the franchise, from Dead Hands to ReDeads and everything in between. With Nintendo hinting that Breath of the Wild 2 will be comparable to Majora’s Mask in terms of scariness, the series is sure to include plenty of horrors in the future, especially considering the sinister vibe of the trailers released for Breath of the Wild 2 so far.
Breath of the Wild itself has its own fair share of scares. Between the sinister Malice covering Hyrule and the Blood Moon bringing dead monsters back to life, Breath of the Wild had plenty of creepy content, which gives Nintendo a great opportunity to ramp up the scare-factor in the game’s upcoming sequel.
However, with Breath of the Wild’s focus on cosmetics, Link is able to dress in various armor sets and join in the creepy antics himself. Among the many pieces of armor that Link can wear in Breath of the Wild, some are truly creepy-looking items, many of which are inspired by some of the franchise’s most ghastly villains. These are the spookiest items that Link can wear in the game, and how to find them.
Dark Link Set in Breath of the Wild
Of all the enemies to appear across The Legend of Zelda franchise, one of the most infamous is Dark Link. The Dark Link Set makes Link look like his shadowy counterpart, increasing his night speed and scaring friendly NPCs he approaches. It includes the Dark Hood, Dark Tunic, and Dark Trousers, all of which can be purchased from Kilton’s shop, Fang & Bone, for a grand total of 3,997 Mon. Fang & Bone is only open at night, and its monster-loving shopkeep has plenty of spooky wares for sale if Link can catch him before morning.
Radiant Set
For a bit of classic Halloween fun, Link can dress up as a glow-in-the-dark skeleton with The Radiant Set. This bone-chilling armor allows Link to disguise himself from the Stal enemies that roam Hyrule at night. Link can buy the Radiant Mask, Radiant Shirt, and Radiant Tights for a total of 1,600 Rupees from the Gerudo Secret Club. The password to get into this secret shop can be heard by eavesdropping in the Noble Pursuit, the bar across town.
Majora’s Mask
Majora’s Mask is arguably one of the scariest games in the Zelda franchise, and this creepy artifact can be found in Breath of the Wild as part of The Master Trials DLC. With its dark past and haunting appearance, this mask allows Link to blend in with monsters of all kinds. The mask can be found at Lake Kolomo Garrison Ruins by using the Magnesis rune as part of the quest, "EX Treasure: Ancient Mask". Fortunately for Link, it seems the dark spirit of the mask doesn’t intend to possess him, for now.
Phantom Set
The Master Trials DLC also adds the Phantom Set to the game, which is based on the design of Phantom Ganon from Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. With its glowing red eyes and menacing appearance, this armor lets Link dress up as another of the franchise’s ghastly villains. Each piece of the set has a base power of 8 and gives Link an attack boost, though there is no set bonus for this set, and it cannot be upgraded.
The Phantom Set can be found as part of the quest, "EX Treasure: Phantasma." The Phantom Helmet, Phantom Armor, and Phantom Greaves are found in three different locations in Hyrule Field, which include the Colosseum ruins, the Sacred Ground Ruins, and the Hyrule Garrison Ruins. Using the Magnesis rune and the Sheikah Sensor will reveal these hidden chests.
Phantom Ganon Set
As part of The Ballad of Champions DLC in Breath of the Wild, Link can acquire the Phantom Ganon Set and don the appearance of the original Phantom Ganon from Ocarina of Time. This set is one of the most sinister-looking sets of armor in the game with its skeletal face and long horns, and it grants Link a boost to stealth and disguises him from monsters. It also boosts Link’s attack power when fighting with bone weapons.
The Phantom Ganon Skull, Phantom Ganon Armor, and Phantom Ganon Greaves can be found as part of the quest "EX Treasure: Dark Armor." The three chests are hidden in Faron Woods in reference to the original boss battle in Ocarina’s Forest Temple. They’re located under Sarjon Bridge, under the waterfall at Corta Lake, and next to the broken statue in Ebara Forest. As with the Phantom Set, these treasures are easily found with the Magnesis rune and Sheikah Sensor.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available on Nintendo Switch.
