The Resident Season 5: Emily VanCamp Exits Fox Show After Four Seasons

Emily VanCamp is exiting The Resident after four seasons. Premiering on Fox in 2018 and based on the book Unaccountable by Marty Makary, the medical drama focuses on the lives of staff at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital. The show has also delved into the themes like the bureaucratic issues at play in the hospital industry.

VanCamp, who recently reprised her role as Sharon Carter in Falcon and The Winter Soldier, has played Nicolette 'Nic' Nevin on The Resident since its first episode. Nic was introduced as a nurse who runs the hospital floor and has a tendancy to go the extra mile for her patients. Over the course of the series, audiences have also seen her relationship with Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) change and evolve. In the most recent installment of the drama, the couple gets married and Nic gives birth to a daughter. But now, it seems VanCamp’s time as Nic has come to an end.

According to Variety, VanCamp is leaving The Resident ahead of season 5. Nic’s storyline and absence are expected to be addressed in the upcoming season, which airs in September. Variety reports that there is hope that VanCamp will be able to return to the medical drama in some capacity in the future.

What has fans worried, however, is the fact that promos for the upcoming episodes indicate potential trouble ahead. In the season 5 poster for the series, Conard is included without Nic. The trailer for season 5 also includes a scene in which police are looking to speak to Conard. This has naturally led to speculation that Nic's character could be killed off to align with VanCamp's exit. For his part, co-showrunner Peter Elkoff told TV Line that fans will likely be shocked by some of the changes that take place at the hospital. While characters dying in medical dramas is fairly common, as any viewer of ER or Grey’s Anatomy will know, it would prove a shocking twist in the case of The Resident, as the relationship between Conard and Nic is central to the story.

No reason has yet been given as to why VanCamp chose to exit The Resident. The actress has worked consistently in prominent television roles for many years, starring in Everwood from 2002 to 2006 before moving on to the dramedy Brothers and Sisters and the primetime soap Revenge. Each of these series, along with The Resident, aired for a number of seasons and boasted a relatively high episode count. It’s understandable that VanCamp might want to take a step back from a busy filming schedule, especially considering the recent birth of her first child with husband Josh Bowman. Hopefully, fans will get to see Nic again down the line.
