Why Final Fantasy X-3 May Happen After FF7 Remake | Screen Rant

The complex story told in Final Fantasy X makes it a beloved masterpiece in the Final Fantasy series. Originally released in 2001 on the PS2, the narrative carried on with the FFX-2 sequel in 2003 and even further proved its magnitude as a fan favorite with an FFX/FFX-2 Remaster in 2014. Now, almost 20 years after the initial release, a X-3 story has been teased as a possibility after the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project is complete.

FF10 follows the story of Tidus, the protagonist from Zanarkand, who seemingly travels 1000 years to the future after his city is attacked by Sin, a whale-like antagonist considered a punishment to the people of Spira. Tidus eventually washes up on Spira's Besaid Island, where he joins Summoner Yuna and her Guardians on their pilgrimage to defeat Sin and bring the Calm, a period of peace until Sin is reborn. The group is successful at beating Sin and bringing an eternal Calm, one where Sin will not be reborn. The journey is deepened by Tidus and Yuna's love for one another, yet Tidus disappears at the end of the game. He and his version of Zanarkand are dreams of the Fayth after the original Zanarkand was destroyed 1000 years before, and don't actually exist.

FFX's ending left Yuna alone without Tidus, and the direct sequel of the game, Final Fantasy X-2, follows her journey in finding a way to bring Tidus back to Spira. At the end of the game (with the Perfect Ending), the Fayth reconstructs Tidus' memories and he and Yuna are reunited once again. However, with the release of the remastered versions, a FFX-2.5 Novella and FFX-Will audio drama added to the story, leaving the potential for Final Fantasy X-3 to take place.

For those wishing to return to Spira, the opportunity may arise because FFX-3 may follow the FF7 Remake project's end. A recent interview from Famitsu, a Japanese gaming magazine, was posted on Ryokutya2089, and included an English translation. In the interview, Tetsuya Nomura and Motomu Toriyama spoke on the probability of  Final Fantasy X-3 ever being realeased. Nomura commented, "There is a synopsis written by Mr. Nojima that if there is an X-3, it looks like this. Will and 2.5 were also written based on it. [It is] sleeping now, but there is a concept itself." Though this is a rough translation, it indicates that there is a concept for FFX-3, and it is based upon the FFX-2.5 Novella and the audio drama, FFX-Will.

Motomu Toriyama adds to the conversation: "The possibility [is not zero]. First of all, I'm not at the stage where I can talk about not finishing the 7 remake production." By saying this, it means FFX-3 could actually come to fruition. However, as Toriyama indicates, it can't even be addressed until the FF 7 Remake project is finished, which means the game likely won't release for many years.

So, while a storyline for FFX-3 actually seems to exist, fans may have to wait quite a while before getting to play another installment of FF10. It's likely another sequel is a long way off as the FF7 Remake projects come first and only the first part of those remakes have been released so far. Hopefully, more news on Final Fantasy X-3 can be discussed in the future.
