Why Far Cry 6 Doesn't Have A Map Editor | Screen Rant

Far Cry 6 is landing in early October and seems to be trying to move the franchise forward in some big ways. The Caribbean nation of Yara is providing the series' largest map yet, the game will have brand-new (and some adorable) animal companions, will return to a voiced protagonist yet feature third-person cutscenes, and much more. By almost all accounts Far Cry 6 will be an effort to expand the horizons of the Far Cry series, but some sacrifices had to be made for the sake of innovation.

Far Cry 6 will not feature a map editor. In previous entries, players were able to create their own maps using in-game assets, kind of like Halo's Forge game mode. Far Cry 5 labeled this Arcade Mode and had a robust set of features, including assets from other Ubisoft games like Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed. Players could create custom single player or co-op missions, competitive multiplayer arenas, mazes, mini games, and anything else they could dream up.

The news comes from Far Cry 6 game director Alexandre Letendre in an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on the Far Cry subreddit. Members of the development team fielded a variety of questions, and Letendre answered one about the inclusion of a map editor with, "No, Arcade will not come back." He mentions that the decision came as part of a difficult choice to more heavily focus on the Far Cry 6's main story and world building.

It's entirely possible that Far Cry 6 won't remain popular as long as previous entries owing to the lack of Arcade Mode's return, but ultimately it probably won't have a drastic effect, especially on Ubisoft. The main campaign and the series' traditional gameplay is the major draw for people looking to pick up Far Cry 6, and anyone seriously interested in the series isn't likely to skip this entry because over the lack of a map editor. Far Cry games always receive some DLC after launch as well, so there's the potential for Arcade to return at some point, but again - people already invested in the game likely won't be swayed on a DLC purchase based on the existence of a Far Cry 6 map editor.

The best hope for fans is that Letendre's statement regarding a more singular focus bears fruit. Far Cry 5 sold very well, but its story in particular received a fair bit of criticism. With actors Giancarlo Esposito and Anthony Gonzalez on board, Far Cry 6 has potential to deliver impactful performances alongside its reportedly expansive game world. The developers involved in the AMA, including Letendre, discussed the narrative structure of the game, claiming it will be much more open-ended than previous Far Cry games, with players having a lot of choice in the order that missions are completed. With the allegedly ambitious steps the developers are taking to broaden the scale of the series in Far Cry 6, the abandonment of a map editor might pay off if the game is indeed more satisfactorily complex.
