Doctor Strange 2: How America Chavez's Star-Shaped Multiverse Portals Work

It appears the MCU’s America Chavez will have the ability to create star-shaped portals in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. New comic book-style artwork for the movie previews a team-up between Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Wong (Benedict Wong), and Chavez, who will be played by The Baby-Sitters Club actress Xochitl Gomez.

Doctor Strange 2 will serve as the MCU debut of the superhero, who goes by the moniker of “Miss America” in Marvel Comics. Having only appeared for the first time in a 2017 comic, America Chavez is a recent addition to Marvel’s vast library of characters and a member of its Young Avengers team. America is also one of several teenage superheroes expected to be important to Marvel’s Phase 4 slate. Form what little is known about the story, it looks like America will be helping the Sorcerer Supreme and Scarlet Witch in their efforts to save the multiverse from whatever threat they’re facing in the upcoming movie.

The art revealed for Doctor Strange 2 hints at what her role will be through the inclusion of star-shaped portal spotted behind the heroes. This portal, which is pulled directly from the comics, is connected to her super powers. The comic book version of America Chavez possesses a variety of superhuman abilities, one of which being the power to kick through reality itself, thus creating a portal to another world. These interdimensional openings – which happen to be shaped like stars – make it possible for America to travel to various corners of Marvel’s multiverse. Apparently, Chavez acquired her unique powerset due to her exposure to a magical entity called the Demiurge in her home dimension, the Utopian Parallel. It would seem that she unintentionally soaked up some of his mystical energies.

America’s portal-creating powers in the comics being carried over to the MCU has implications for what her purpose in the story is, as well as what Doctor Strange’s plan will be. Based on this reveal, it seems likely that when Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch go on their multiverse adventure, the key to going one from dimension or timeline to another will be America Chavez.

Even with every tool and spell in his magical arsenal, Strange may not have a quick method of traversing the multiverse. It’s been said by Elizabeth Olsen herself that Scarlet Witch can accomplish this, but it could be that multiverse travel is a more involved spell, and not one that she can easily pull off. That could be where America comes into play, since effortlessly smashing portals through reality is her specialty. Judging by the title, there’s a good chance that Strange and Wanda will be in a situation where traveling between multiple worlds (and not just a few) will become necessary, which is why it makes sense for a character like America Chavez to be brought along for the ride in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
